The world has become smaller.
You can take the boy out of the Ottawa Valley, but not the Ottawa Valley out of the boy.
I spent many happy hours with Peter programming the RAMSES jammer in the mid-90s, months-long stretches in Washington DC at Naval Research Laboratory's Central Target Simulator facility. They have missiles there that we can use to test RAMSES jamming effectiveness. Peter is in charge of operating RAMSES.
The simulator control room looks like the bridge of the Enterprise, with low lighting. RAMSES is in a room below the control room. There are about 10 people in the control room, I am the trials director.
Testing was proceeding fine, things were working, I took a break to use the washroom. When I came back, everyone was standing around and the lights are up. Me: "What's going on?" Answer: "The jammer's on fire." Me: "You're joking." Answer: "Nope." me: "Where's Peter??" Answer: "He is downstairs fighting the fire."
I flew downstairs around the corner, and I will never forget looking to that room and seeing Peter with the cabinet open trying to beat out the fire with his jacket, with the top the room full of smoke down to about a foot over his head.
We had some lively times, wonderful technical discussions over burgers and fries at Wendy's.
We had a lot of stuff to carry to NRL every day. One Monday morning we were getting ready to carry everything to the van to go to NRL. Somebody handed me a blue and white insulated lunchbox-looking thing, said, "That's Andy's lunch" (Canadian team member Andy Lam). Peter said to me, "You have to carry Andy's heart". It was a long walk to the facility; about the third time Peter asked me How's Andy's heart", I said "Why do you keep calling his lunch his heart?"
To Peter the lunchbox looked like an organ transplant box.
OMG it was like he owned the hotel. He said the bar lounge area was his living room, "Welcome to my living room!". He knew all the regulars - people who drank there but were not guests in the hotel - and was the centre star of the show every night. Peter would tip the bartender big for the first couple of beers, then the bartender just served him free beers all night long.
One Thursday night over dinner he told me he had to have a tough talk with his son Kirk on the weekend. Me: "What's up?" Peter: "Well Kirk wants to have a dog. I told him I'd talk about it with his mum." Kirk was about 4 yrs old, Peter did not want to have a dog.
On Monday morning I asked him how his weekend went and whether he was now gping to have a dog. He said, "Nope, no dog." Me: "How'd you do that?" Peter said he sat down with Kirk and said something like, "Kirk, you're a big boy now, big enough to have your own dog, and next year you're going to school. And you know I work all day, and so does your mum. Kirk agreed. Peter: "That means the dog is home by himself all day long. That doesn't seem fair to the dog." Kirk agreed. And that was that. Masterful.
Everyone. Loved. Peter. He was magnificent.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of the passing of an old school colleague and friend, Peter. We attended elementary and high school together and he never missed a chance to remind me that we lay side by side in the nursery back in 1961 in the Arnprior Hospital. We were born only a day apart. What a beautiful, funny human being he was, always with that distinct smile on is face. Sending loving thoughts to Paula and his family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am heartbroken to hear of Peter's passing. Though it has been many years since we were last in touch, I will always remember the great times we shared growing up in Arnprior and going to school in the late 70's and early 80's.
Those memories will forever remain a special part of my life, and will always be grateful for the friendship I shared with Peter.
Please accept my deepest condolences during this difficult time. My thoughts are with the entire family, wishing you strength and comfort in the days ahead.

Very sad to hear Pete has passed. I have very fond memories working with him. He was always in a great mood and could make anyone smile. My most vivid memory was being at the Eagle's Stadium in Philadelphia supporting our network there. There was a bomb scare, the game stopped, and we hightailed it out of there straight to the airport. He was a great guy - the world is a lesser place without him.

So sorry to hear of Peter's passing. I worked with Peter when we were teenagers at the Arnprior Civic Center. We had to fill the zamboni with water, remove the nets and shovel snow and ice after the ice was flooded. Needless to say we had lots of fun at work and laughed from the time our shift started till its was finished. Peter had a great sense of self and a great sense of humor. He could always find just the right thing to say to make us laugh in any given situation and we made the best of it. Sending sincere condolences to you all and all of Peter's family and friends.at this very difficult time.

We are so sorry to hear of Peter's passing, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time
So many memories we have of the Beattie family great times and laughs
One memory will never forget was Christmas Eve the year before Mac passed, we went over to Mac and Marie's had a full night of singing, stories then Peter came up with the idea of phoning the main house from Marie's hair salon pretending he was Santa. Our daughter was about 8 and Jay was around 4, those 2 kids couldn't get us home fast enough cause Santa told them he was on his way. Perfect evening we had there
So many memories of Peter, and the entire Beattie family we will never forget.
RIP Peter
