Dear Stephanie and Family,
I am sorry to hear of the loss of your parents. I am shocked at how close their deaths happened to each other but I think it’s a true testament of how much they loved each other. I still remember your parents even though I haven’t seen them since childhood. I have great memories of growing up in Etobicoke/Toronto and hanging out at your place. Your parents always made the kids feel welcomed, despite our antics. I will keep them in my thoughts and cherish the memories. Sending hugs to you and the family.

The mention of Don Sullivan's name brings a smile every time. We shared many years of schooling, from grade one to grade 13, in Arnprior. His quiet demeanor and ready wit was always available at the back of the homeroom classroom. You knew a line was coming, but you had to wait for it. He didn't change. We especially appreciated the generous, timely, assistance of Don and Sheila, prior to an urgent health crisis. They arrived at the hospital with legal papers to be signed and sealed, moments before Gerry left for the Heart Institute. Unbelievable and much appreciated. We offer sincere condolences to their families. Please know that Don and Sheila will be missed and remembered by many. Sincerely, Mary and Gerry Pulcine

My first enduring memory of Don will be from a case we did many years ago. There had been a search of the accused person's home. Don brought a application under the Charter of Rights. But instead of quoting recent caselaw, he regaled the court with a quote from William Pitt, "The poorest man may, in his cottage, bid defiance to all the force of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storm may enter; but all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement." Don's use of an 18th century quote to uphold the rights of his client was the essence of the man; erudite, dedicated to the rule of law, and committed to his clients.
My second enduring memory of Don will be his smuggling of single malts into the Pentetanguishene Mental Hospital, as it was then known, for the use of the members of the board who considered inmate cases. Such behaviour today would be considered inappropriate and probably litigable. Don (and I) would consider it an act of common human decency.
Deepest condolences to Don's family and to Hannah, whom we all know will keep up the good fight of her dear mentor.

Don was a treasured colleague, whether we were working together on a case or on opposing sides. Don had the whole litigator’s package: civility, honesty, a compelling (if restful) courtroom voice, the respect of fellow lawyers and of the bench, a serious (though sometimes lighthearted) dedication to his clients’ best interests, a great trove of war stories, both from the Valley and from exotic, far-away Toronto. I will miss him, and I’m sure the courts of Renfrew county and Ottawa will too.

My contacts with Don were infrequent despite our both having practiced law in the County for more than 40 years.- because we were at the eastern and southern extremities of the County. However, I immediately developed and have always held a profound respect for Don as one who epitomizes all that a lawyer should be in terms of personal integrity, love and respect for the law (including in particular the ideals embodied in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms) and capable and courageous representation of his clients. I admired his calm and articulate submissions on behalf of his clients in court. Don's death is a sad loss to the County's legal community and to the community at large.

I will always remember Don as a unique individual, not bound by the usual expectations. He lived his life his way. He was always up for a good time. I will cherish the occasions we shared with a good meal, a glass of quality scotch, political debate and lots of laughs. These photos are memories of one of our great days together.
There will be a line up in Heaven for Don’s legal advice and his pro bono approach.
Rest in peace, my friend. I will miss you.

I met Don late in life, and wish it had been much earlier. There are people you meet that it takes time to get to know, and there are people you like the instant you meet them, and Don was one of the latter. I guess you could say Don and I had a Guinness and Canadian history relationship. I mean, how many people can say they have stood together over the gravestones of Simon Fraser and Lester Pearson? The world is not as good a place as it used to be.

Our Sincere Condolences to Don’s Girls and their families.
Don always had a story or joke, that I admittedly, never quite got. We would both laugh “because” of his dry sense of humor instead of “at” it !!!
Don never did let me to go to court with him, despite how many Law/Crime Novels I had read and claimed I could help :)
Both Don and Sheila, being my clients and us theirs, for many years, became valued friends and will be truly missed.
With heavy hearts, our thoughts also go out to Hannah, Ken, Bernie and Greg, as they navigate this tremendous loss.

Paul Murphy (Don's brother-in-law) and Helen Klengenberg wish to give warmest condolences to the family, Noreen and Stephanie and their children. When Don first came up to Iqaluit, in 1995 with Sheila, we had to go to North mart to buy him a pair of jeans, he was over dressed for our community, he did not own a pair of casual pants. Since then, Don fell in love with denim. His court pants just didn't go well with riding on a four wheelers. RIP PEACE DON
