Tudy was a lifelong World Federalist whose idealism and recognition of the need to strengthen the rule of law and global institutions was grounded in a solid understanding of Canadian foreign policy, current events and diplomatic practice. Pictured below in the pink shirt, Tudy supported the campaign for a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly.

What a wonderful person Tudy was! From my first weeks in Ottawa in 1987, I was so impressed with her spirit, her intellect, and her world-wide work ethic. She will be very much missed. sincerely, Liz Benjamin

Donna and I send our deepest condolences to Lynnie, Heather, Sheila and Margot. Tudy and Alan were dear friends and wise mentors to us as we began our diplomatic life in Moscow in the late 70’s. We so remember those fun times, especially with all the McLaine girls. Tudy was full of love and life and truly one of a kind. We will miss her. Jim Wright and Donna Thomson.

As a member of the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa for over 20 years, I first got to know 2D because of her involvement in the annual UU-UNO Conference in NYC. As a youth leader, I got to take a group of youth to the conference, and 2D was there from our congregation, leading the charge on motions and creating "to do" lists for us to follow up on when we got back to Ottawa. A passionate and dynamic leader, she was such a great mentor. I learned a lot from her about how to navigate locally and internationally.
As well, 2D was very involved in leadership in our Global Justice Action group, and more recently the Justice and Equality Action Group, which I chair). The pandemic did not slow 2D down; she joined our Zoom meetings on a regular basis.

My condolences to the Mclean Family for the loss of your Matriarch, known to me as Tudi. She was a great friend and a person committed to social justice and doing something about the inequities around us. She was a mentor for me in introducing me to the International Community. She had many international connections through her work as an ambassador’s wife, and through her connections with the UU United Nations office. She was never satisfied to just address the problems in Canada, but truly saw things from a global perspective. Tudi had a way of insisting that I look at things from this larger perspective and pushed me to attend international groups that had influence in Ottawa. I remember when she moved to New Edinburgh Square, she took it as an opportunity to meet new interesting people, and, of course to organize them into having speakers and events to reflect on the news of the day. One of my highlights with Tudi was sharing the experience of attending the spring seminar of the UU United Nations Office.
Blessings to the Family, Frances Deverell

My heartfelt condolences to McLaine family. Your mom had a great wisdom and it’s amazing to read the accomplishments during her lifetime especially having been in various countries. Aside from embracing various cultures and languages, she contributed in a positive way i.e., teaching ESL not to mention promoting women by establishing international clubs. A pure dedication by Susan. May GOD rest her soul in peace. Amen.
