Obituary of Bill Fehlner

William “Bill” Fehlner, PhD

With sadness for our loss but gratitude for a life well lived,

the family announces that Bill died peacefully at the Almonte General Hospital with loved ones by his side on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

William Robert Fehlner of Almonte was 83 years of age.

Beloved husband for almost 60 years of Jacqueline “Jacquie” (nee Denis).

Dearly loved Dad of Maria Nightingale (late Bruce), Christine Fehlner-Gardiner (Ian), Monica Chamberlain (Paul) and Aimée Fehlner (John-David Brophy).

Cherished and proud “Pépère” of Angelique Nightingale (Johannes Chan), Gwendolyn Nightingale, Siobhan and William Gardiner, Bernadette, Sophia and Michel Chamberlain, Renée and Gareth Brophy.

Dear brother of Thomas Fehlner (Barbara).

Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.

Son of the late Herman and Mary (nee Considine) Fehlner, Bill was also predeceased by three brothers: Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner (OFM Conv.), Francis Fehlner and James Fehlner (Christina).

Bill was a person who had a wide range of interests and talents.

He valued education and learning in many different forms, which also made him an excellent teacher.

He was a scientist, earning a PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois.

He worked as a physicist, computer scientist and statistician in universities and private business, a career that took him from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Toronto, Ontario.

Bill was a creative musician, vocalist, wood worker, writer and cook.

He loved to read, and he was also a story-teller, creating tales for his children such as the beloved “Prairie Chicken” stories.

Bill loved the outdoors and could be found enjoying nature in any season – cycling, cross-country skiing, canoeing, camping, gardening and hiking.

He shared these interests with his children and grandchildren, encouraging them to pursue their own interests and passions, and always supporting them.

Bill lived a life of compassion and love.

A deeply spiritual person, he gave himself in service to others in his gentleness, peacemaking and simplicity.

Bill was a generous and welcoming soul who lived the message of the Beatitudes.

Bill and Jacquie have been active associates of the Congrégation de Notre Dame and have served as leaders at the local and national level.

Final arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the
