When I was 3 years old, my mom, dad and older sister, Jill moved to 3190 St. Clair Ave. East. On Saturday mornings, I watched a television show about a boxer called Joe Poloka. After the show, I went out the back door of my home. As I walked down the driveway, I was humming the theme song for the show and was throwing punches into the air. As I got to the front of the house, I heard a voice say, "good morning Joe Poloka". I looked over and there was Norm Stanely, with Bernice standing beside him. Little did I know at that time, that Bernice would be in my life for 75 years. They quickly became Aunt Bernice and Uncle Norman. When Xmas morning came around, we would always wait for Bernice and Norm to come over before we opened presents. Even after we moved several miles away, when I was 11, the tradition remained. I remember clearly staring out the window waiting to spot their volkswagon come chugging around the corner. In my last conversation with Bernice, I thanked her for all she had done for our family. She replied, "your family brought me a lot of joy". God Bless you Bernice and looking forward to spotting that Cardinal that you promised to send me.
