Obituary of Bernice Stanley

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mildred Bernice Stanley, who died on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the age of 103.

Born on January 2, 1923, Bernice lived a long and meaningful life distinguished by kindness, curiosity, friendship, and a keen sense of humour.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norman David Stanley, with whom she shared many years of companionship and devotion.

Although Bernice and Norman had no children, they were surrounded by a wide circle of family and friends whose lives they enriched.

Together they cultivated enduring friendships that sustained them through every stage of life.

Among their closest friends were Harvey and Peggy Easton.

Their friendship spanned decades and was marked by shared travels, memorable experiences, and many happy celebrations.

Those who knew Bernice and Norman often remarked that their friendship with Harvey and Peggy resembled an episode of I Love Lucy.

Whether travelling together or spending time closer to home, they found themselves in amusing situations that became favourite stories retold over the years.

They also enjoyed many gatherings and celebrations, including lively New Year’s Eve parties filled with laughter and good company.

Bernice was a devoted godmother to Harvey and Peggy’s daughter, Lorie, and remained an important presence throughout her life.

Her care and support were evident not only during joyful occasions but also in times of hardship.

When the Easton family experienced the loss of their son David at the age of sixteen,

Bernice and Norman provided comfort and steadfast friendship, reflecting the depth of their loyalty and compassion.

Bernice possessed an exceptional memory and a lifelong love of learning.

An avid reader, she particularly enjoyed books on Canadian history and geography and was always eager to broaden her knowledge.

She also appreciated novels, especially romance, historical fiction, and mysteries. Reading remained one of her greatest pleasures throughout her life.

A gifted conversationalist, Bernice genuinely enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

She delighted in sharing stories, exchanging ideas, and engaging in thoughtful discussion.

Her warmth, intelligence, wit, and sincere interest in others made her a valued friend and companion.

Bernice will be remembered for her sharp mind, generous spirit, enduring friendships, and ability to bring enjoyment to those around her.

Her long life reflected the importance she placed on kindness, learning, laughter, and meaningful relationships.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially Lorie, her husband Brian, and Lorie’s daughters, Lindsay (and her husband, Graham) and Kathryn (and her husband, Alex).

The memories she leaves behind and the friendships she nurtured will continue to be cherished.

A simple graveside service will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery in Scarborough on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 11:30 a.m.,

where Bernice will be laid to rest.
