I met Bob when Jacques Roby and I purchased life preservers and floater coats for the Canadian Armed Forces and cadets. Bob was more of an ally than salesman when it came to protecting the end users.
This trait could only be magnified in his dealings with his family and close friends.
Accept my condolences, I remember him fondly.

Dear Ollie and Family, We were deeply saddened to learn of Bob's passing. He was a wonderful gentleman and great friend. His strong patriotism and allegiance to the Military were always evident. We always knew where we stood with Bob. He was a great supporter but could let you know in no uncertain terms when he disagreed. It is a priveledge to carry his name into the future with the Award in his honour which is part of the Canadian Chapter of SAFE Association. Each time it is presented we are reminded of Bob's lifetime of service and his inspiring leadership. In Deepest Sympathy, Pat & John Winship

To the Sutherland family: I can't make any comment on "Uncle" Bob's artillery career and I was rather young when I spend time with him but, I can certainly comment on his genuine & caring personality. His love of family was almost palpable and he extended his family to encompass so many others as well. I can honestly say that I always felt good when I was around him and I remember laughing whenever he was close. One of my fondest memories of him occurred in Lahr when he came into the CANEX where I was working. He wanted to see me but rather than ask at the desk for me to be summoned to the front door, he simply stood there and yelled in that enormous voice of his, "COORRRKKKYYY!!" I knew it was him in the instant I heard my childhood nickname at the other end of the store and I ran, not walked, all the way into his arms. He was a dear man and an exemplary human being, proud of his family, his work, and of Canada. We've just lost one of the good ones and he will be missed by all who knew him. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Know that others grieve with you and will be remembering Bob & you in their prayers. Love, Cory McTaggart

Uncle Bob represented all that was gallant and good about my country's part in the Second World War. He was my own personal hero that I am so proud of. As a young student, whenever class discussions turned to that war or Canada's other military committments, Uncle Bob was the example that I always hastened to bring up. In recent years he was a pillar that I could always count on to provide wise and informed opinion and advice. Even just hearing his voice on the telephone was comforting. He leave me a legacy that I cherish and that will continue to inspire me.

I was honoured to know Red Sutherland in his Picton days in the 50`s and later in Germany during the 70`s. I completely endorse Harry Rice`s excellent tribute to Master Gunner Bob (Red) Sutherland. He was a big presence in that small elite "Band of Brothers" known throughout the Royal Regiment as "Master Gunners". He was a superb trainer of officers & NCO`s and a natural leader of men. Red was highly respected by all who knew him. The "Regiment" has lost one of its best.

To Ollie and the family: There will be very many in the larger Gunner community who are, and were, better Gunners and individuals for knowing, and serving with, Bob Sutherland. He was not only a Master Gunner, he was the quintessential Master Gunner. His passing is a personal loss to both Sylvia and I.
