To my dear Sister Vicki:
I know that you and Robert shared a lot of beautiful memories together. From all the pictures I saw at his memorial service, I could see on his face that these were some of the happiest times in his life. Whenever you are feeling sad or lonely just remember how he made you smile and all the special times you shared together. I know he left this world to soon but it was wonderful that he found this wonderful special person to share his last days on this earth, and I am sure this brought him so much comfort in the last months. I know you made him feel special too.

Thank you for this invitation to leave a note. I met Robert a few years back on the occasion of a business trip to Washington, D.C. Robert was a very pleasant and agreeable person and we had interesting conversations over a couple of dinners. On 1 such occasion, a discussion ensued as to the relative merit of the professional sport of soccer versus America's sport of Baseball. I was successful in explaining baseball to Robert as being similar to the British game of rounders only it uses bases instead of pins. It was in my mind to invite Robert to see an Ottawa Fat Cats baseball game at the former Lynx stadium this summer once his recovery has been well under way. Unfortunately, the Great Umpire has taken Robert off to the Clubhouse before the opening of the 2011 season. Robert wanted to be a Canadian citizen very much which underlines how fortunate his Canadian friends are to be born into this privilege which is often taken for granted. This theme has truly been brought home today as I return from my son's history class after having done a presentation on my Grandfather and his role in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Our freedoms and privileges as Canadians can never be underestimated after knowing how many people have given their lives to make this the greatest nation on earth. Robert was excited to become a part of the Canadian experience including a developing appreciation for Hockey. Robert wanted to be part of this nation and although his dream did not become completely fulfilled he will nevertheless live on in the hearts and memories of his friends, loved ones, and his newly adopted family here in Canada.
