How do you say goodbye to someone who has always, from the day you were born, been your role model and hero? I was fortunate in my childhood to have spent so much time with Grandpa – often, months on end as I recovered from surgeries – and develop what I can only describe as an incredible close, special relationship. We would talk for hours about the days of old, and the experiences that Grandpa had when he was in his youth and later as a father; stories that almost always had a comical component (even in his last few days, Grandpa reminded me that ‘it was good to laugh’). When we weren’t talking about the past, we were often on the road headed to places I had never been before and that I have never been back to since (our trip to the Byward Market is still vivid in my mind). We’d take walks up the train tracks and stop along the way to pick wild strawberries on the side of the hill and, when the cups were full of strawberries for Grandma, we’d tried to see who could throw a rock closest to the groundhog holes on the other side of the creek. Grandpa was also an incredible teacher and he could fix just about anything. Later, in my teenage years, whenever he was working on a vehicle or some other engine, he always found the time to explain and show me what he was doing and then would let me ‘test’ drive his car up and down the driveway. When it was nearly time for me to get my driver’s license, Grandpa, without hesitation, offered up his Corsica so that I could practice. We would take trips around town, parallel parking on hills, and other challenging tasks for a novice driver. Thanks to Grandpa, I easily passed my driver’s exam. Shortly after the exam, I proudly drove Dad’s Blazer down to Grandma and Grandpa’s and proceeded to back over one of Grandpa’s light posts at the end of his driveway….it was a good thing that Grandpa could fix just about anything. Despite having just created a new fix-it project for Grandpa, he was still so proud and never once, brought up the light post. Years later, when I went off to school in London, we still kept in touch just about every weekend by phone. We’d talk, sometimes for more than an hour, about what was going on back in Arnprior and how everyone was doing. Despite the distance, Grandpa and Grandma were there in loving support for the happiest and darkest days…even making the trip down to London on more than one occasion. After moving back to Arnprior, that loving support continued, and I learned so many life lessons from talking with Grandpa. Always a gentleman, every conversation I ever had with Grandpa would start off with: “And, how are you today?” He was always concerned about the well-being and health of others. And his response to even the smallest thing, such as dropping in for a quick visit on my way home from work was “Thank you so very much”. I am blessed to have been able to spend so much time with Grandpa throughout my life and develop that special relationship that we did. Grandpa was my role model and hero and he played one of the most important and influential roles into shaping me into the person that I have become. Love you Grandpa.
