Many of my "LAURA MEMORIES" have to do with food and sitting at her table. As everyone knows, Laura was a fabulous cook. In the old days, she would serve each plate from the kitchen and when finished would sit down herself. Laura's table was always ladened with extra little things like homemade relishes, fresh cucumbers sliced lengthwise, pickles, sliced tomatoes (just in case someone might enjoy a taste) and of course her wonderful homemade rolls. At Christmas, Laura always ate the turkey wing. It was her favourite part of the bird and in her stated opinion, it had the most flavour. She was right! After dinner, Laura was the one to wash the dishes since she alone could continually rinse in scalding hot water! I remember being invited with my sister to lunch after church one Sunday in Ansonville. That day I learned how to make coleslaw with a knife! I have a memory of a roadside break with Laura behind some bushes on our way to Burnstown from Iroquois Falls one Thanksgiving. The visual of the two of us would be x-rated but there was alot of laughter going on that chilly October day. Then there were the times when she would get me to trim her hair when the style was short and straight at the back with curls framing the face. Skip ahead many years and there is another memory of a lunch at Laura's table again. A number of Heather's collegues were invited to Laura's condo for lunch after golf in Arnprior. It was lovely to re-connect with Laura and enjoy among many delicacies, her baked beans and homemade rolls again. I saw more of Laura when she moved from Arnprior to Bell's Corners. Laura was present whenever Hedy entertained. She joined a few of us at one of Heather's dinner parties. As the rest of us sat chatting after the meal, Laura got up and quietly began cleaning up in the kitchen. It was only at Hedy's insistance, that she stopped; admitted she WAS a little tired; and went off to bed. I wondered then how long we would have her with us. Soon we were celebrating Laura's 90th birthday. There she was with make-up done to perfection; dressed to the nines in a fabulous outfit; looking no where near 90 and greeting everyone with such grace. Then there was an afternoon visitng with Hedy and Laura out by Heather's pool! My young granddaughter came with me and for weeks after she wanted to know when we could go back for a visit. That afternoon in the sun, is a very special memory for me because the pool is gone and now so is Laura. I know life has to go on but there's an ache in my heart.

Laura has been weary for a number of years and longed to "go home". Through it all, she gracefully endured. I'm happy for her but sad for us that she has finally made this journey. She was an amazing lady and has left a big hole in our hearts.
