I found out last week that Grannie had passed away. I have such fond memories of her. She had such joy and fun in her life. She cooked her dogs liver and kidneys, grew plants that slowly took over her house on Cranbrooke. She used to collect the china figurines for me in the Red Rose Tea boxes. She bought me a charm bracelet and for years bought me a charm for my birthday and Christmas. I remember the lilly of the valley's under her big spruce tree in the back yard. She and Grandpa picked me up from Girl Guide camp in their mustang! We wrote letters back and forth for years.
My favourite story about Grannie is not from my personal memory, but one she told me after I joined the Catholic Church in my 30's. She was horrified when my parents did not baptize me when I was a baby. One day when my mother left me in her care, she gathered my four aunts and uncles around the kitchen sink, and performed an emergency baptism on me! So of course she took credit for my eventual Catholicism!
I hope she's reunited with Grandpa and her dogs, smoking a cigarette and sipping on a beer.
