So sad to hear of the passing of this gentle giant. Thoughtful, kind and quite funny at times and respected by all. Even called him my teddy bear after the surgery, to which he chuckled, gave me a pat and, smiled.

Today, May 6, 2014, in celebration of 20 years a breast cancer survivor, I had wanted to call Dr. Jose Gustauskas and thank him again for the successful surgery he had done in 1994 of my radical mastectomy. I was so shocked when I searched his name on the internet to get his telephone number, as I live in B.C. now, to learn that he had passed away just recently. Dr. Andrea Gutauskas, my deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. I would like you to know that I am so grateful that he was my surgeon, taking great care and patience when I was so young and terrified of the diagnosis. And even to this day, medical personnel who do my check-ups say "what a beautiful scar you have- your surgeon did a marvelous operation." I never hesitate to name him when I thank them. May he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Diane Bourgeois
Surrey, B.C.

Andrea and Family, Kirstin and I are so sad to hear of the passing of your Dad. Dr. G was always caring and compassionate, which made visits and the chats that came with them something to look forward to. He offered me lots of thoughtful common sense advice about my aging parents. He clearly cared about his patients and I always felt that I was in good hands. Andrea, I don't know the rest of your family but I do know he also had to have been a wonderful man to do such an excellent job of raising a lovely girl and another Dr. in the family. (Though he did have a little help from GGC :-) He must have been so proud !

I want to extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your dad. I will be forever grateful for his and your skills as surgeons when I needed you most. My surgery would not have turned out the success it was without the father/daughter team I had working on me!! You were very fortunate not to only have a skilled surgeon to work beside and learn from, but a lovely man to share your off time with! God bless you all!!

Jose was my classmate and we spent many afternoons after lectures talking about the medical school, politics, what we wanted to do later. We were both immigrants, escaped from Soviet orbit, so I thought we bonded particularly well in those first 2 years in Med school. We both wanted to travel and he promised he would see me through to see some of Venezuela. I am so sorry that I didn't get a chance to do that......
I saw him last about 10 years ago; i mourn his death as a friend.

It is with sadness that we read of the passing of Dr. Gutauskas. Norm was very fortunate to have Dr. Gutauskas operate on him several times, always with expertise and a sense of humour that made the events almost 'enjoyable'. Norm was also fortunate enough to have Dr. Gutauskas' daughter, Andrea, step in and provide treatment when his hernia surgeon was out of town. It is evident that this is a wonderful and brilliant medical family. To Dr. Gutauskas' family, our sincere condolences on your loss. His passing is not only your loss, but that of his many patients that were so fortunate to have him as their surgeon. A fine doctor and a wonderful person.

Dear Andrea and Family, It is indeed a most sad time for you, your family and everyone who was fortunate enough to get to know your Dad. He was a wonderful doctor and an incredibly compassionate and caring man. During my many years as his patient, I learned, first hand, how proud he was of his chosen career and how significant it was for him to have you follow in his footsteps. He loved his family, his classical music and his medical practice. Dr. G lived his life, to his final day, in the true meaning of the saying: "To Thyn Own Self Be True". God bless you Dr. G. May He keep you in His loving care forever! You will be forever missed. Yours sincerely, Brenda Allardyce

To the Gutauskas Family, I have had the pleasure of knowing "Doc G" for the past 3 years. I was terribly shocked and saddened to hear of his sudden passing. Doc G was in every essence of the word the quintessential "doctor". His compassion, his dedication, his kind manner and his willingness to do whatever he could to help, was simply remarkable. There are few of his kind, and he will be missed greatly by many, many people. Doc G has been instrumental in diagnosing and treating many members of my family, and his personal involvement with each of us made everyone comfortable and secure in the excellent care they were receiving. Arnprior Regional Health and Arnprior District Memorial Hospital has lost a significant Doctor and this void will not easily be filled. My condolences go out to all of you. Regards, Tracy Reid

I met Dr Gutauskas in an examination room as i was vomiting in a sink and he said to me..you dont look very well. lol..I had a gall bladder attack so severe i was obviously sick and writhing in pain. He admitted me immediately and surgery was done first thing in the am. During surgery my gallbladder ruptured and he did his miracle work..I guess he didn't expect me to be sitting up 4 days later in my chair with my makeup on and dressed waiting to go home...He said he was expecting to transport me to Queensway that day if i hadnt made a turn a round....so after that he called me his miracle patient..I was very happy to have such a competant surgeon...
My sincere condolences on the loss of a caring loving man. I saw it in his work..

I would like to express my sincere condolences on the sudden loss of Dr. Gutauskas. He was a wonderful man, surgeon and teacher for his daughter, Andrea who followed in his footsteps to become a wonderful, caring surgeon herself. She had a great role model. I remember laughing with him as I tried to interpret his hand writing and asking what he wrote and he could not read the orders himself. He will be missed greatly. His family will be in my thoughts and prayers over the next few days, and months ahead.
