I just came across some old emails between myself and Debra from some years back when I was looking for work at Citizenship and Immigration. Although she had a very busy job she took the time to meet with me and provide me with advice. Once I found work at Citizenship we stayed in touch and sometimes chatted. I appreciated knowing her and was always thankful for the help she gave me. She seemed like a very special person.

I and my colleagues at the Refugee Admissions Office at the Department of State were honored to know and work with Debra over many years - years in which her passion and devotion for refugees were unwavering. There was never a meeting where she didn’t challenge her peers and partner organizations to do better, a standard she lived up to herself. We will miss her laughter and her occasional tears – heartfelt emotions she was unashamed to exhibit in defending and fighting for the rights of refugees. We are better people for having had her as a colleague and friend.

I remember the day you were introduced as the new girl in our grade 8 class, Holy Name Elementary in Toronto, we were 12 years old. Your long dark hair that seemed to touch your knees had me envious. We discovered that we shared the same birth month and year. Our similarities also had us interested in the same boy! Throughout the year we became good friends and we attended the same high school, St Joe's Wellesley. Our time in school was short and sweet and we continued to strengthen our friendship as we got married and had children. As fate would have it, my family moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1990 where you, Guy, Alex and Nicolas also resided. We embraced each other as sisters, celebrated birthdays, holidays, supported each other through life crisis and created wonderful memories. Way too soon we moved away from each other to follow work and family commitments. Time passes on so quickly. We always made time to call each other on our birth month to get caught up on family news. We also had the opportunity to visit each other throughout the years, our friendship endured for over forty years. My dearest friend I wish you comfort and peace in the next life and know that you will always live in my memory, unit we meet again when we can pick up where we left off.

I write bringing heartfelt condolences to family and friends of Debra Pressé, on behalf of the Canadian Council for Refugees. Over her many years of service, Debra attended many CCR consultations as well as meetings with CCR. She was known for her deep commitment to refugees, her sense of humour, her compassion and her desire to find practical solutions to the problems faced by refugees. We laughed together, sometimes cried together. On occasion, yes, we disagreed, but there was never a doubt but that we shared a passion for welcoming refugees, and deep distress at the ways in which refugees are made to suffer. We knew how she was looking forward to retirement and spending more time with her family and especially her grandchildren. She had many friends within the CCR and will be sadly missed.

To Guy and family, my deepest sympathy. Debra always did everything with passion and compassion. We worked together for many years and became good friends. Her wicked sense of humour, intelligence and commitment to her job were deeply felt by all. As important as her career was to her, her family was first in her heart. She always spoke of Guy and the boys with such pride and love. Shortly after Christmas she told me that she was so happy that both her sons had found such wonderful women to share their lives with. She knew they were in good hands and that gave her a certain peace of mind. We loved sharing stories about our kids and grandkids. I will miss that. I’m away right now in India. I visited the Taj Mahal last weekend, shortly after receiving the awful news. I brought her with me in my heart to one of the wonders of the world. Only fitting for someone as wonderful as she. She will be missed by so many. Judy Blyth

To Debra's family: From the beginning I was privileged to work with Debra during my 8 years in the public service. Her work was of tremendous value. She saved the lives of many individual human beings, and she made a very troubled world a better place through her undaunted humanism, while along the way touching many others also engaged in the battle. Too soon! I am deeply saddened by Debra's untimely departure from us and grieve along with you during this sad time. I can only offer the solace that Debra lives on in those, condemned to horrific fates, now living safe and sound in Canada through her efforts.

I am deeply saddened at Debra's passing. I had the privilege of working with Debra for many years in refugee resettlement. She always showed a respect for the contributions of NGO's like the Canadian Council for Refugees and we recognized her deep commitment and heart for refugees. I enjoyed working with her whether we were were collaborating or on different sides of the table. Her legacy is generational and larger than most will realize especially because Debra always saw the larger picture and how small steps can build to big change. Her actions saved the lives of many thousands of refugees. When we both became proud grandmothers we would take a few moments to share news on the little ones. I hope her grandchildren know how much she loved and cherished the times she enjoyed with them. I will miss her.

On behalf of the Sponsorship Agreement Holders Association Council, I want to express our support to Debra’s family, friends and co-workers at Citizenship and Immigration Canada. We grieve her loss with you. It was clear at every moment with us that she cared about vulnerable refugees around the world and used her gifts of organization and analysis to help them. I think part of her strength came from the fact that even after many years of working in this area, she could be moved to tears by the stories she heard. I like many who worked with her from the SAH community over the years, often received encouraging words and wise advice and I treasure those words. We will miss that encouragement, which she continued to offer us even days before the end of her life. And we will miss her warm smile. We are glad that we were able to make Debra an honorary member of the SAH Association when we met her for the last time in February. We did that because in many ways she was always part of us. Her passing leaves a void in our lives too. Know that your wife, mother, grandmother, dear friend and colleague touched many in the SAH community and there is a lot of love and respect for her there. Know that we are truly grateful for her life and deeply saddened at her death.

To Debra Presse family, I had the fortunate opportunity to work with Debra for many years in different capacities, most recently last year under Canada chair of ATCR. Debra was a remarkable, caring individual who was a tireless supporter of refugee resettlement. She was deeply moved by the plight and resilence of refugee newcomers. On more than one occasion, whether it was a national or international forum she was, at times, brought to tears, by the stories of triumphant and struggles of refugees, an unusual sight for a civil servant. But, although her work gave her moments of tremendous gratification, when she spoke about her kid's and grandchildren her face always lite up. She will be deeply missed. I find it poignant that Debra passed away on refugee rights day. May she rest in peace.

Every atom we possess has almost certainly passed through several stars and been part of millions of organisms on its way to becoming us. We are each so atomically numerous and so vigorously recycled at death that a significant number of our atoms - up to a billion for each of us, it has been suggested-probably once belonged to William Shakespeare. A billion more each came from Buddha and Genghis Khan and Beethoven and any other historical figure you care to name. We are all reincarnations-though short lived ones. When we die our atoms will disassemble and move off to find new uses elsewhere - as part of a leaf or other human being or a drop of dew.

I worked with Debra for many years. She was truly a great public servant and a wonderful human being. You can be proud of all she did to promote citizenship to newcomers and to help the vulnerable of this world find safe haven in this wonderful country. I will miss her kindness, her warmth, her feistiness and her irreverent sense of humour - truly one of a kind. My sympathies for your loss.
