I am so sad to hear of the sudden loss of Terry. Terry had a profound impact on me, and on my career as a social worker. I was so young when I began child protection work, and somehow he conveyed such strong confidence in my judgment… In the judgment of each one of us on that child protection team, for that matter… I can't help but wonder how much sleep he must have lost during those years, and never letting on! But that was Terry… Supportive, reassuring, and motivating, and down-to-earth as they come. MJ, I am so sorry for your loss… I hope you and the 'kids' will find some comfort in knowing how deeply and positively he affected so many lives. The ripples of his stone in the water extend quite some distance...

Patricia and I offer our condolences. We are very sad that Terry has passed. Terry was a great leader, a person interested in the wellbeing of others. He wanted things to work well and was committed to excellence. I loved to debate with him. Every debate we had was about the pursuit of truth. This is a rare quality since most people simply debate to win. 10 years after he had left the CAS in Simcoe we met in Toronto at a conference, there we picked up a debate like there had been no pause. He raised the issue and conceded that following his recent personal experience that I had a point. This too was a great quality of his that he could admit to being wrong. He supported me when I got into political trouble because of a community development project that he allowed me to take on within the role of child abuse specialist. He said that if a social worker did not occasionally stir up trouble he wasn't doing his job. He was a formidable thinker and a great writer. I trusted him implicitly. With his leadership, he helped maintain respectful collegiality, a high level of professionalism, creativity, and a safe psychological and relational environment. I have met few people and professionals like him.

I met Terry at the Dominion Grocery Store in Arnprior where we both worked the summer just before he went to St FX. We kept in touch for the next 3 or 4 years. And then we hitchhiked out to Vancouver with MJ. Somewhere just out of Banff we were picked up by a couple of guys who had picked up some Korean War era army signals trucks at a military surplus sale. They had two trucks and were picking up hitchhikers all along the Trans-Canada. Picture two chaps shaved heads and tats but a rides a ride, Travelleing though the Rockies at night the trucks pull off the road. Thoughts of our bones being found years later passed through my head. The back doors spring open and we were invited out. And one of the drivers said words to the effect that he figured none of us had seen a night sky as clear as what we would see in the middle of the Rockies. We stared at the most clear and star filled sky for a while before pilling back in and resuming our journey.
MJ, I just found out about Terry's passing. The Greek philosopher (Greeks were big on philosophy) once said that what we leave behind are not the words chiseled into stone monuments, but rather the fabric we have woven into the lives of others. Terry did just that leaving more than just a few threads among many. The thoughts came flooding back.

So sorry for you loss, MJ, Browyn, Ian and Margie. Words cannot take away your pain of loss. But the memories and joy live on forever. Terry was on of my favourite people, not to mention co-workers. We worked over 23 years together, closely. He was like a big brother (although small in size). He was such an admired human being. Well respect in his field and one of the most knowledgeable people I know. We had many laughs together and being his friend I consider an honour. He will be so missed, taken way too soon. When we were very young boys on Morris Street in Pembroke I could not get the hang of tying my laces. One day Terry took pity on me and bent down and went over the tying sequence slowly and deliberately until the light came on and I did it. From that point on he was my hero and even though I was older he was the brother who showed me the way.

Dear Mary Jo, my very heartfelt sympathy in the loss of your husband and friend. Just recently, Mar. 30 and Apr. 09, I lost two of my four brothers, both were heart related. Lon, was sudden, and Allan was hospitalized for almost 2 1/2 weeks, both were extremely hard to deal with. I definitely, understand what you are going through, may family and friends help you get through the next few days, and may your inner strength carry through what is to follow.
