Obituary of Harry Powell

POWELL, Harry Harry lived a full life and joined heaven's euchre tournament on Sunday July 6, 2014 at the age of 93. Harry will be remembered with much love and laughter by his daughter Chris (Brian Cavan), son Philip (Diane Blunt) and grandchildren Neil and Kate Cavan and Beth and Drew Powell. His wife of 35 years, Marjorie (Costello) passed away in 1985 and he shared almost 20 years of marriage with Viola (Sullivan). He will be greatly missed by his sister, Arvella (Taylor), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Anna Mae (McMullen), and brothers, Richard and Edward. He leaves behind many friends in the Ottawa Valley. Harry lived all of his life in Arnprior. He spent his working days at Kenwood Mills. He spent his working nights as a gentleman bouncer in the Valley's legendary dancehalls under the guidance of his friend and mentor Alex Staye. He only had to use his Air Force boxing skills on rare occasions. It was his good nature, quick wit and sense of humour that always managed to keep the peace and made him widely known and well-liked from one end of the Valley to the other. Harry was happiest on the river at his cottages, first at Fort William, Quebec, on the Ottawa and later at Burnstown on the Madawaska. The family wishes to thank his caregivers and staff at the Villa and the Grove, as well as Drs. McCarthy and Greenough. Friends are invited to share their memories of Harry with his family during visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior on Thursday, July 10th from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral celebrated by Harry's brother-in-law Fr. Michael Costello will be held at St. John Chrysostom Church, 295 Albert St., Arnprior on Friday, July 11th, 2014 at 11 o'clock. Harry will rest next to Marj in the Malloch Road Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital or the Canadian Blood Services. One of Harry's favourite expressions was, "Never say whoa on a hill." He never did.
