To Derek's Family-my husband and I only learned of Derek's passing this weekend when we went to Denny's to see if he was still there. The manager was heartbroken to speak of Derek's passing. My husband and I both have extremely fond memories of Derek from our youth. Derek was my first "boyfriend" starting in grade two during a movie we were watching in class at St. George's. I was the new girl to the school and something seemed off during the movie. I found out during recess that day that Derek wanted to be my "boyfriend" and he gave me a quarter and some candy. We had lots of fun from about grade two to four - you may have heard the stories of the girl that baked cakes with her Easy Bake Oven for Derek - that was me. Flash forward many years and when my husband and I went to a Denny's and met Derek there, well, it was then that I learned that my husband played hockey with Derek when they were young and it would have been at the same time that Derek and I were "dating" and thereafter for a few years. How worlds come together! We were so sorry to hear of Derek's passing, we will miss him. He always had a smile for us! Our most sincere condolences to his family and friends. Love Carey and Steve

I have been shocked by Derek Barr's passing. Over the past couple of days I tried to find some words for my friend that would be appropriate. I have heard all of the stories and kind words from all those who loved him. They are all what I would have shared and more, he was one great guy with a huge heart. He used to tell me of a time when he was so excited to play on the first line with Larouche Park in senior hockey. The coach gave him a chance to play ahead of a guy twice his size and half of the heart Derek played with. There was not a chance he was coming off of that line due to his not playing hard and he stayed there. He gave everything he had in everything he did, and he has left me with an inspiration to emulate that. He loved Darlene and he once told me she saved his life, I am happy she did. Derek you can play on my wing anytime buddy, I love you, and I wish I could have one more round with you. You're the best!

For Darlene and all of Derek's family my heartfelt condolences during this very sad time!
Fisher Park High School was where I first met Derek and he was the kind or person that always left a good impression on people from the start. Luckily our friendship continued over the years even when we didn't see one another for long periods of time. We golfed a few times over the years which was a passion for both of us, and then he ended up getting me a job working with him at Noah's. Like all of us I will miss his "joie de vivre" and calling me "Kid" all the time. Have a safe journey my friend!!

I am so sorry to hear of your brothers passing, until I had seen this notice I did not realize that Derek was your brother, There was several mornings where I would be at Denny's early prior to doing a flooring job in the city, your brother always looked after me. He was always in a great mood and would often have conversation with me if it was not too busy.
I will miss those times that started off my day.

How very shocked I was to hear of Derek's passing. Derek brightened all my visits to Dennys for almost 12 years I suppose.
I always asked for him to serve me as we just clicked from day one. He remembered what I liked & always made sure it was just right - perfect!
After about 4 years, somehow his acting came up.
I saw him perform in 3 or 4 plays & he always invited me backstage. I enjoyed "knowing" an actor.
I last saw Derek when he stayed late at Dennys to serve at my 70th B-day party. I told my wife I'd like my party there, and she asked him if he would work.
I always took friends to meet my favorite server AND FRIEND, Derek.
He told me he would like to come to Florida & play golf someday - I had hopes he & Darlene would make it.
He was always telling me the count down to his wedding, & I did get to meet his lovely bride once.
I know I am but one of the many he made happy & who will miss him greatly.
He was taken from us far too soon.

Darlene and family, I am so saddened by the loss of Derek. He was such a special person who seemed to take joy in everything around him. I first got to know Derek while running Prop's for Cuckoo's Nest at Kanata Theatre when I had to come up with a mouth guard for his 'electric shock' scene! Since then we have worked on numerous plays together. There was never a dull moment having Derek in a production! He was a pleasure to have around and such a talented person....he could even curl! I will miss his resounding voice and sweet greetings. My thoughts are with you and your family.

So saddened and shocked to hear of Derek's death. I will remember him for his smile and laughter and the joy he brought to any gathering.
I first met him as McMurphy in Cuckoo's Nest playing along side Fred Cattroll as Chief. He knew all his lines and effortlessly and flawlessly got him back on track again if Fred forgot any. They had a secret signal between them when Fred forgot a line.
He always had a warm greeting with a hug, a smile and "How are you sweetie".
I will, as will many others, miss him terribly.

My thoughts are with the family of Derek. I went into Deneys every 2 -3 months with friends prior to a morning meeting. Derek would see us from a distance and always came over with a joke and a few laughs. We never had to actually place our order. .... he knew exactly what we wanted without fail. He didn't work at Denys. ...... he was Denys..... you will be missed my friend, but never forgotten

I am in Spain until March 21st so regretfully will not be able to attend the visitation or service. I considered Derek a special friend due to my involvement at Kanata Theatre in Cuckoo's Nest and Bonspiel. He was a talented and caring person, and my daughter and son-in-law remember him from when he served them grits at Denny's when they were visiting from Windsor. They send their condolences, along with mine and my husband Derek's, for a life ended all too soon.

I light this candle in Derek's honour and memory ...... I am adding something I posted on Facebook. It sums up Derek " Dexter" very well. We were in the same year at Fisher Park High School - Class of 1980
Derek "Dexter" Barr was an absolute beauty. There was not a mean bone in his body. He was everybody's buddy. Always polite, genuine and a true caring individual. As they say, only the good die young. Derek was real. Derek was good. Derek was real good at everything he did. Derek will be missed by many. For Fisher High we do or die ....... #GodSpeed #RIPDerekBarr #FuckCancer
My deepest condolences to Darlene and the rest of the family ...... God Bless you all.

My deepest condolences. We met Derek as customers at Dennys. It was right beside the Merivale Imaging centre, where my partner had to have numerous scans and tests. We would go over to Dennys after and a couple of times we had him as a waiter. What an entertainer.....he was so awesome, made us want to go there just to get his service. I watched him with the other customers, because I work for a bank and customer service is so important. I always thought, wow, this guy could train bankers in good customer service. I send my condolences to his family and friends. He was a very impressive human being......
