My sincere condolences to Tracy and all of the Millar family.
I have many fond memories of Fred from when I was growing up in Pakenham, and from when I worked for the R.A. with PROP. He was a relentless volunteer and respected by everyone he knew. Fred was indeed a pillar of the Pakenham community and indeed Pakenham has lost a piece of itself in his passing.

I never knew a Pakenham without Fred. He was one of the first people I met when my family moved to Pakenham when I was 12. As I settled into the village and began participating in activities, Fred was a constant presence, always around the skating rink and the ball diamond. I'm sure I took him for granted as just the person to go to when I needed to know what time something started, or where something was, or how to get a door unlocked.
At 16, though, I quickly learned exactly how much Fred really did when I became the Pakenham reporter for three local papers. I had the by-line, but little did everyone know it was actually Fred who filled my columns. Sure, I might have written three weekly "who visited where, what, when and why" contributions, but it was Fred who showed up at the door Sunday night at 10 o'clock (probably one of the few times he stood still in his busy week) to hand me his five foolscap pages written in triplicate, reporting everything from Aces and Royals to little league ball scores, to hockey, broomball and ringette scores, to swimming lesson notices, to the rink schedule, to the upcoming dances and recreation association meetings.
This arrangement continued until 1971, when I joined The Arnprior Guide as a full-time employee, and got to see Fred's contribution to Pakenham on a whole new level. Although he had been involved in winter carnivals in the past, under his guidance Pakenham's 1974 Frost Festival started a new chapter in the village. He sought sponsors, sold advertising, and put countless hours into the production of a printed programme with me at The Guide's printshop. That programme and the ones that followed weren't only handy schedules of the many events that filled each Festival's days and nights, but also testaments to even more of Fred's skills and devotion to the community. He turned everything into an event. Even beyond the Frost Festival, Victoria Day and Canada Day, too, expanded into ten-day celebrations of community spirit.
Also during this time, Fred was instrumental in the fundraising, planning and construction of Pakenham's new arena. On top of all this, of course, he managed to work a full-time job in Ottawa. His amazingly generous wife, Lola, shared him with everyone, even as she shared his love for the village and became indispensable in her own way.
Fred and Lola both would probably be uncomfortable to know what an inspiration they were to me. They made me appreciate what a huge difference we can each make.
Ritchie and I would like to extend our condolences to you, Tracy, on the loss of your Dad. Pakenham is going to miss him, but never as much as you will.

Tracy, Bruce, Jake & Braeden,
My heart hurt yesterday when I heard of Fred's passing. Being neighbors, Fred, Lola & Tracy have always been part of my life. And if you had the privilege of growing up in Pakenham, you without a doubt knew who Fred was. I look back and think this man drove to the city 5 days a week working a full-time job, then came home to run everything recreational for our community. Being a small town, we didn't have the luxury of having a Recreation Director. No, we were fortunate enough to have a man who poured his heart and soul volunteering a tremendous number of hours. A man who volunteered more hours than anybody ever knew or will ever know. A man who wanted "no" recognition for what he contributed to our community. He did it because he loved what he did. Yes, Fred ran it all. Back then we had 2 fabulous ball diamonds that were always fully occupied and a booth with no better help than Lola & Alice running it. Then come winter and he kept the ice fully booked, and to add to the chaos he also planned our entire Frost Festival schedule and also kept a very active, weekly dart league running over the winter. And if that wasn't enough, he'd toss a few euchre tournaments in here and there for more excitement. After that it'd be on to the horse shoe league for the summer. And of course there were always dances for whatever the season or reason to have a party in the hall and yes Fred was right there at the helm of it all.
Fred Miller, if life we should all leave our mark. You without a doubt left your mark in Pakenham, and Pakenham was so blessed to have had you! I sure do hope that green Pakenham coat is hanging in your closet in heaven.
Till we meet again,
~Heather~

Fred Millar - Truly one of the good guys!
He was one of the kindest, thoughtful and most helpful person I have ever met. It was about 1967 when I first had the opportunity to meet Fred at a sporting event. My goal - to start up a travelling fastball team - Fred's goal - to start up a competitive ladies fastball league. With his direction and regular meetings with the Pakenham Recreation Association both are dreams came true. But it wasn't just for the ladies but for the guys as well. Between Fred and the late Bert Hall of the Arnprior Recreation the travelling, competitive leagues became a reality.
He was always there for us and even after his retirement he continued to support all ages, male and female softball/fastball teams/leagues.
I like to think we remained friends for ever. In the early nineties I got to work and volunteer along side him at the Pakenham Civitan Club and at Country Haven. After all those years I continued to be amazed at how Fred's personality never changed - he was the same kind, caring and thoughtful man I knew in the sixties.
My thoughts and prayers are with Tracy and all of Fred's family and friends. Though the community has lost a true ambassador - He and Lola are together again, just where they should be. RIP Fred XXX

Tracy, Mervin / Judy and families: Where does one stop in the use of adjectives to describe that impact that Fred has left on Pakenham? Dedication to his job, his carpool friends and of course his love for 'everything good'' for Pakenham will never be duplicated - that mould has passed. Fred Millar Park, is just one small but lasting legacy of what Fred meant to community and those associated with and who had the pleasure, of his company and opportunity to volunteer as he created SOMETHING OF INTEREST IN PAKENHAM ANYTIME OF THE YEAR.
Pakenham was identified throughout Eastern Ontario as the 'Volunteer' capital and it was through Fred's efforts and tireless work that this developed and grew. Seeking the limelight was not Fred's way. Content on having something well organized, on time and enjoyable for all was Fred's way.
A lasting memory / picture of Fred would be standing in his favourite location in the upper hall of the Stewart Community Centre, sipping on a cold Canadian and celebrating the good old St. Patrick Day preludes and parties with the hall full of his family and friends.
Thank You Fred - Pakenham is a far better place for your presence We learned from the best.. Denny Ferguson

My deepest condolences to Tracy and to the entire Millar family. Fred epitomized sports and volunteering in Pakenham for many years and through his tireless voluntary efforts we had great facilities that were always ready to use. Dear Tracey and family....
When growing up in the Pakenham area, NO EVENT would have been complete without seeing Fred doing something to make it a success. Sports, suppers, dances - and so much more. Fred was a details kind of guy and he ensured that every last detail was looked after even if he was not asked to do it - he could always be found there making sure it was completed the right way.
Please know that we have many great memories that we shared with Fred....and of course Lola as well.
God Bless you all in the days ahead.
