Thank you Sloan, for helping me and the others with the effort to save Gillies Grove. Your leadership as the President of the Save the Grove Committee during some of the most trying times helped us succeed. I learned much from you and am thankful that you helped me complete a project that will live on in our community. You, and those of the Committee who left us before, will always be remembered whenever anyone visits the living legacy of Gillies Grove. Thank you for being there and God bless you.

I first met Sloan Watters right here in our parish community, of St John Chrysostom, as a volunteer, We soon bonded, and formed a good friendship, that I will cherish for my remaining days, he was a very precise and organized man, always pulling out his little notes with instructions for us to follow, or to make new ones.
He was a great outdoorsman, and naturalist , and spent time involved in various related organizations , and of course his beloved northern Ontario retreat, he was a wealth of knowledge on the plant and animal world, I would marvel at him explaining some plant and its place in the ecosystem, that I just considered a weed.
Sloan managed an old, time honored Canadian tradition, of making maple syrup, of which I had the privilege of getting involved with, There was always lots of work to be done but it was fun, we spent many hours cutting, piling wood, fixing broken equipment, making trails, the list goes on. Sloan at the end of each day or task that was carried out would say “hallelujah job well done “ We the (3 remaining sugar bush boys) spent many days and years together with our friend enjoying each others company, and will always be cherished.
To Elaine, Marjorie, Bill, & Jim, my deepest sympathy , I will miss him greatly. and so to quote my old friend “hallelujah job well done “ RIP ...Sloan your work on earth is done

As a kid joining the Macnamara Field Naturalists back in '83, I was wholeheartedly welcomed by Sloan and the other inaugural members. I fondly remember Sloan teaching me how to identify the song of the olive-sided flycatcher: "Do you hear that, Cathy? It said, Hip, Three Cheers!"
He was also the person who introduced me to the phrase, "scarce as hen's teeth", which as a 13 year-old, I thought was delightfully brilliant.
Thank you, Sloan, for all the nurturing.

Dear Elaine and Family;
We received the sad news of Sloan's passing today from my brother Jim. I remember Sloan as a great boss at Gillies and have many fond memories of hunting and fishing with him at Temagami. He was always held in high esteem by my parents and the rest of our family as well. Letters from home during my travels often had news of you both which I appreciated. He will be missed by all who knew him. We wish you and your family well at this time.

On behalf of our family, I would like to thank all that have commented and written a little something about my grandfather. Reading some of these posts have reminded me of some of the things he has done with me and my family in the time I've been lucky to know this great man. Much learned from his wisdom, always surprised me with what he knew and did and will be greatly missed.

Dave and I are extremely sorry to hear of the loss of Sloan. He was a great man, with a great heart and a deep feeling for the world around him. He was a mentor of Dave's, in the logging sector of C.A.L.A. and it was a pleasure to follow the values that he put forth in life and his respect for the values in the environment around us. God bless him.
Respectfully, Dave

Sloan was a pillar - an oak of a man. A gentleman of the forest, and class act naturalist, he was like a mentor to my sister and me, teaching us about the ways of the woods with his wonderful storytelling. He was a giant in many ways: heart, humour, kindness, soul - a lovely man who loved nature. I cherish the memories of many ski trips, hikes and naturalist club meetings with dear Sloan, and most of all I'll picture him with head thrown back, belting out his great laugh.

I met Sloan in 1955 in Temogami, when I was 16 and knew him all my working years at the Braeside saw mill. We worked together on the cannon that he moved from Braeside to the museum in Arnprior.. I used to play on it when I was a kid. We had a good chat at the mall last year. He was a fine man, and I will miss him. Rollie

Dear Elaine, Billy, Marjorie, and Jimmy: I am so saddened to hear of Sloan's passing. He was a giant in my young life, the man who taught Billy and I to know the woods, build canoes and birdhouses and go-carts, find beaver dams, drink from the right streams.... Too many things to list. I will remember him always, I have rarely gone more than a few days without recalling his kindness and patience. I am keeping you all in prayer.

I will miss Sloan at the yearly card parties. He and Charlie always seems to meet up with us for the evening and I enjoyed talking to him, hearing of his adventures as he gathered sap and made syrup and just the laughter as we took on the challenge of trying to beat each other in euchre.
I will miss his gentle kindness and soft spoken manner.
RIP my friend. Keep watch over all the creatures you so enjoyed to meet in the woods.

I am so heartbroken to hear about Sloan – he was such a wonderful man.
I will never be able to walk through the forest again without thinking about him, and how he loved the maple sugar bush! I will always treasure his stories, and the wealth of knowledge he imparted about the creatures who share the natural world with us.
A genuine, hardworking, kind, generous and industrious man who had a love for life and who was always at the ready to help...may you rest in God’s grace and love.
Elaine and family, my prayers are with you all, and may you find peace at this difficult time.
