I first met Janet in the late 1980s in a life skills course with Greg and other great participants. At that point they were not “Janet and Greg”. I think that seed might have been planted during the course. A couple years later I was in a local diner with my partner of the time and they announced in our usual chat from the next table that they were engaged. Janet showed us her ring. They were radiant. There was some concern about how they would cope as a married couple. They got through that challenge as they got through so many, together. With the wonderful support of L’Arche, their living situation evolved through the years (I can’t believe it’s been 30 since we met). I always have a picture of them walking hand-in-hand, no matter what type of challenge life threw at them. When Janet and Greg had their own house on Bell Street, we reentered each others lives through the Bahá’í faith. Through the years since there were many gatherings we attended together; starting on Bell Street, through their time together in their apartment, where they hosted in the common room; and at the homes of many friends, including my mother, Billie. For a few years, Janet wore this wonderful purple winter hat. I love purple. (I think she did too.) When she was at a gathering with that hat I kept threatening to steal it, telling her it might disappear if she wasn’t careful. When she didn’t have it on I asked “where’s my hat?”. She would look at me and say, “Sue. You’re crazy!“ And then she’d give me a hug. When one or the other of us hadn’t been able to attend meetings for some time and then we’d see each other again, Janet would cry, “Sue!!!”, and make a beeline to me a for a hug. Those were the best hugs. How could anything be better than that? We’ll miss you, Janet With love, hugs and prayers to Greg and everyone else who feels the loss of Janet, Billie and Sue Hobbs
