I first met Rick when I joined Hydro One as novice in 1999; he had accumulated 20 plus years in security and law enforcement by then. He was a veritable font of general knowledge, obscure facts and hidden talents. During a close protection course in 2001, there was an executive driving phase using rental cars on a remote training area near London, Ontario. Participants were required to drive an obstacle course, against the clock. The final test involved reverse driving and finally parking between two other rentals. While most of us took a pedestrian pace, Rick threw his car into high reverse, tires spinning. We watched with bated breath, waiting for the sound of crashing glass and metal. But Rick pulled it off – putting his vehicle neatly between the parked cars, without a scratch and without the help of any backup camera. My deepest condolences to Joan, Allison, Stephen & Adam as well as Rick’s wider family. He will be missed.

Condolences to the Hughes family. It is a sudden loss for your family and Rick will be missed by everyone. I met Rick in 2009 and right away he left a lasting impression. He always went out of his way to help anyone, Rick was always a phone call away. I have great memories of Rick from working with him and ATV trips. Rick was a valuable employee at Hydro One and I relied on his dedication to providing a wide range of asset protection services to Eastern Ontario. Rick and I often spoke of times at his cottage with family and of course sharing “fish stories”. As we all remember saying, “you can take the boy out of the Valley but you cannot take the Valley out of the boy”. My fond memories of Rick will always stay with me. My condolences to Rick’s wife and family. A life cut far to short.
