Visiting Lyllis and John for a number of years was always a special time for me. The love they had for each other was very evident and they weren’t shy about showing it. John always had practical advice for me - it seemed fitting to call him a Gentle Giant - I will miss him greatly.

As a young kid, away from my own home & family for 2 years serving a mission for my church, John was a 2nd dad to me. I think he & Lyllis knew how difficult it was to be away from home & they took care of me as if I was one of their own. John & I shared many laughs, memories, & even a few tears that we quickly pulled back into our eyes or turned to wipe away as we were too tough to let each other know we’d ever cry. John’s heart was HUGE! Though I live thousands of miles away, John made it a point to call me at least once a month so that we could chat. It was hit & miss on those calls over the years, but the last few months, he really made a point to ensure we talked. I wonder if he knew these opportunities were numbered before I did.
I will forever be grateful for the friend & father like person John was & is to me. God has gotten back one of the good ones & I can promise it’s not goodbye for us, it’s “see you later” I know we’ll all get to see John again someday, there is zero doubt in my mind about that.
Lyllis, I love you! I am so very sorry for this temporary loss. But you & John are sealed together for eternity, how cool is that! What a reunion it’ll be! I know John will be looking out for you & waiting anxiously to be reunited with you. You are both so amazing and dear to me and my family. We love you.

Heartfelt condolences to John's family
John coached me and my buddies way back when we were only around 15 years old. He was a dedicated coach and would take us to games or practices in his van as no one was old enough to drive . We were playing in the Senior League and held our own against much older players . Such great memories. He instilled in us the values of team play and always encouraged us to play our best. Thanks to him I enjoyed many years on the diamond and will always remember him as a great coach and kind and generous man.
In Sympathy

Scott, Shelley, Cyndi and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I have fond memories of John from back in my Stewartville, and McNab School days growing up on my grandparents farm (John & Rachel Slingerland). He was always so nice to me, never seen him without a smile on his face. Thinking of you all.

John once told me about the one inch ghillie rule. There were two lumber jacks using a big two-man cross cut saw. They were taking their time, so the crew boss came over and told them to stop. He measured the saw, then walked away. He did this several times until the perplexed woodsmen asked him what was going on. He, in turn, asked them if they knew of the one inch ghillie rule. They said they hadn't. The crew boss then told them that they were only working hard enough if they could add an inch to the saw. He explained to them the principle of heat and how it expands metal. Eventually, when they were finally working hard enough, the crew boss did a final measurement and complimented the lumber jacks on meeting the rule's requirements. Loved John's stories.

Lyllis and family,
My condolences on John’s passing. I have many fond memories of working with him at ADMH and especially loved how well he kept the grounds and flower beds looking so pristine during his time there. In the last few years, I happened upon him at the pool at the Nick Smith Centre and we had some enjoyable chats. I trust your wonderful memories will be of some comfort to all of you.
Sincerely,
Karen Townley
