Obituary of Harry Martell
(WWII Royal Canadian Navy Veteran, Retired Canadian National Railway)
With sadness the family announces that Harry passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at home on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in his 99th year.
Beloved husband of the late Jean (nee Falconer). Cherished Dad of Janet (David Flaherty) and the late Brent (2022). Proud special grandpa of Liam Flaherty. Predeceased by his sister and three brothers: Charlie, Helen, Gerald, and Edward.
Born in Pointe St. Charles, Quebec to Caroline (nee Briand) and Michael Martell, Harry joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a signalman on the corvettes in the North Atlantic during WWII. Following the war, he worked for the CNR as a fireman on steam engines then as a locomotive engineer.
Harry and his great love Jean lived in Lachine, Quebec for 50 wonderful years. Then in 2003, he moved to Arnprior, Ontario and he grew to love his adopted home.
Always the gentleman and full of grace, he persevered through every illness with a smile and gratitude. He loved his family first and enjoyed spending time in his garden, walking and participating in aquafit at the local pool.
He will be dearly missed by his many nieces and nephews, the Flaherty family and his wonderful friends and neighbours.
Special thanks to all the health care professionals who cared for him over the years. Your dedication and support meant the world to him. Gratitude to Dr. John Lee and his staff (Ottawa West Medical Centre), the nursing and PSW staff of Bayshore Health and SE Health. Renfrew County Paramedics, and Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital.
Harry's private care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home. Harry desired to spend eternity in the seas, so his ashes will be spread at a later date.
If you wish to wish to donate in his memory, please consider your local food bank or Arnprior Regional and District Memorial Hospital.
