Dear Kathy and Mike and the entire McHale and Smith family, Please accept my deepest sympathies on Tom's passing. I was shocked and very saddened to hear this. Tom was a wonderfully kind and caring gentleman. He had a great sense of humour and his laugh was contagious. I have so many fond memories. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Tom for over 10 years while at Rideau. During his career from correctional officer to manager he was well known for his honesty and integrity with both staff and inmates under his care. I always valued his option whether solicited or not and very much enjoyed his method of delivery which ranged from being very direct to a hint of humour, a quality I always enjoyed. He was always calm in tense situations and at the ready when it was necessary to jump in to assist other staff. Truly a gentleman and a wonderful, wonderful person. Please accept my condolences on your loss.

Tom was one of the nicest people I have ever had the privilege to know. He was always a true gentleman, with a great laugh, a real sense of humour and a caring heart. Tom would and did help anyone who asked for or needed a helping hand. As with many others, I will really miss Tom. My sincere condolence to his family for a the loss of a great guy. Rest in peace. To the McHale family, While Tom was a fellow member of the Knights of Columbus (at St. Philip's Church in Richmond), I did not know him very well. I am one of the branch's newer members and he was one of the very few (not to mention one of the first) to recognize my reticence, which prompted him to regularly seek me out at meetings in order to make me feel welcome. As if this wasn't enough, he never shied away from my several requests for assistance with ushering duties during Saturday mass, something for which I'll be forever thankful. I shall truly miss him. Please accept my sincerest condolences during this difficult time.
