Dear Oattes family. I had the privilege of having Mr. Oattes as a Phys Ed teacher but he really inspired me as a Basketball coach. ‘Coach’ brought out the best qualities of me and our team by motivating us to always work together and to never give up. Whenever I find myself in a difficult spot, I imagine ‘coach’ flashing that golden toothy smile and telling me to get up, get back into the game and engage your teammates. I know he has physically left us but he has left a legacy at ADHS and with me and he will never be forgotten. Thanks Coach, you are forever in my heart.

Mr. Oattes was my cross country coach in high school. I loved his words of wisdom and encouragement and I remember asking him what success would be. He told me that if I continued running as an adult than that would be success because it is the enjoyment of sport that matters the most. Mr. Oattes was a great coach.

I never had Wayne as a teacher or a coach but that didn’t mean he didn’t know me. He certainly had connections to my family members.Your mother Grace was my grade two teacher, back when she was Miss Ready. I’m sure Wayne's death leaves a hole in your hearts, especially being the loss of a last parent. Cherish your personal memories as well as the memories shared with you of a well loved man. Helen & Wayne's family
Saddened to hear of Wayne's passing last week. Wayne Barkley and Jack were of an age with myself and my brother James (of Georgia now) when we were raised on farms facing each other across Queens line. The Oattes farm, and Thompson place with Keith Bennett just down the road. The memories of those early years on the farm could fill a book.. We leaned to ride cows bareback when they were let out of the stanchions, or eat block salt after the cows licked it (germs?? not likely) when we used it with veggies like carrots stolen from the gardens. or playing "pirates" walking across a ladder (ship to ship) on the barn beams in the hay mow. How any of us lived to celebrate 80 is amazing and makes the stuff they make kids do today like buckle up or have crossing guards is pretty thin gruel. we all walked to the Queens line school together and if lucky got a ride in the bread truck . minus 40 in bare feet in snow uphill was not that far off some days. 13 kids for 8 grades (bless Mrs Ferguson our teacher) and Jim (Univ of Buffalo,) myself (Cornell), and Wayne(Queens) all got degrees. not a library, specialist or computer in sight, Best education is the one room school, you learned from each other. . But I wanted to let you know he will be missed in my life as were his brothers. I hoped he passed on some of that Queen's Line logic and love of life, we all grew up with. I'm sure he will be missed. I would have joined you but just read the obit in Citizen and I am committed for tomorrow. so accept my love and warm regards from Prescott and I'll say a special prayer for Wayne and his entire family. To the Oattes family,
So sorry to hear of your loss. In my time at ADHS , "Mr. Oattes" taught me for only one semester. In that short period of time I got to know a man of quiet confidence and a calm nature, who had the amazing ability to teach a bunch of rowdy kids without having to raise his voice or lose his temper in the process. Those qualities were not lost on me and he had earned my respect in a day when respect for adults, much less teachers, was not high on my list of priorities...
My sincerest condolences to you all,
Rob McLachlan

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Oattes coached me in javelin in my ADHS years, as well as teaching at least one of the Phys. Ed classes I took. He was a kind, gentle coach who knew how to bring out the best in all of us. He worked with me when I went through some “form” problems in my javelin throw, and finally accepted that I would never embrace the shotput! His impact on generations of ADHS students is immeasurable.

Enough can never be said about Mr. Oattes (Wayne). He taught and led by example, perhaps changing the course of many students futures without ever knowing it. At many gatherings when discussion of “the old days” in high school comes up, the teacher most often remembered is Coach.
Between the years of 1968 and 1972 many students were not feeling the love for the high school establishment. Unsure of the world around them, they remained across the road at Stadnyk’s confectionary smoking cigarettes (it was a thing then) and not coming out for sports. Amazingly, somehow he bridged that gap making it just about the game only and albeit slowly, he filled the ranks of teams with the people he wanted. Gifted to say the least.

Mr/Coach Oattes' Family
I am so sorry for your loss. A Valley lad (who came back), Queen's Graduate, teacher, coach and mentor. In my Keepsake Box, I have the "ADHS Cross Country Map", dated October 09, 1981. It will not upload right now, therefore I cannot share it. It includes the entire Grove with paths, roads and Gilles House, Robert Simpson Park, Hospital and Oblates, ADHS & Track, Sandy Beach, and Arnprior Streets in that area. Midget, Junior and Senior Boys training distances and routes are all included.
This map is a small example of the rigor, time, dedication and care that he put into teaching and coaching.
As X-Country Coach, his best line during training was "NEVER let them think they're going to overtake an ADHS runner on the up-hills! Always beat them on the up-hills!"
Rest Well Mr. Oattes.

Deepest Condolences to Steven , Kelly - Joe and Susan
Mr. Oates was probably the best coach I, and many others , ever had. And yes it crossed over into multiple sports. I never truly appreciated his gift-- and we were too young and dumb to realize we were surrounded by greatness in his presence . I reflect and speak proudly about the ADHS dominance over the many years and Mr. Oates- Coach Oates was always at the forefront. Mr. Oates , I witnessed it first hand turned ordinary kids into Athletes and together they became provincial champions. And as a friend said, "he cared as much about you as a person , as he did your athletic ability"-- but never forget he hated to lose , and made us all "winners" those that were fortunate enough to be around him
Thoughts and prayers and great memories to cherish for all who knew him.
We have lost a Legend and a true gentleman, but his legacy lives on.
Rebound ...Rebound ...I can still hear that from the stands at the old arena and it echoed even more at the Nick Smith Centre.
RIP Coach -Dave McCormick and family

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
By Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
