My brother Ted was an extraordinary person. He was many things; Husband, Father, Grandfather, Engineer, and Politician.
He was above all else passionate.
Growing up Ted had many hobbies. He was passionate about each of them.
He was an avid shortwave radio listener. His wall was covered with verification cards, posters and awards from all over the eastern block. I can only imagine the looks the postman gave our mum when delivering mail from Albania or China during the cold war.
At age 12 he was making his own telescopes, grinding his own mirrors and testing them for focal length and spherical aberration. I used to accompany him downtown to monthly meetings of the Royal Astronomical Society in Montreal both to attend lectures and to book time on their telescope, which at the time was behind the McGill stadium.
Like many hobbies, they soon took second place to education, career, marriage and starting a family, but they were never forgotten completely.
Canadians like to complain about two things: the weather and politics. While there is little one can do about the first and a lot that can be done about the second, people rarely do so. Before joining NRC Ted ran as a candidate in the Reform party of Canada for the riding of Renfrew-Nippising-Pembrook in both the 1993 and 1997 elections. Now this riding had been liberal going back to Laurier, one might ask why bother? You have no chance of winning! It is a measure of Teds passion to reform government that not only did he make significant inroads he managed to change peoples perspectives. He probably would have had a third go at it, but by then he had joined NRC and the government frowns on its civil servants running for office.
He was passionate in Engineering; be it stress analysis on water bombers or any aspect of aerospace. I remember at one labour day get together, he was excited about an out of print book that he had just purchased on the Horton brothers flying wing. He always took airworthiness and safety very seriously. He once told me that his job at NRC was to make sure that Pilots and Crew made it home to their families at the end of the day.
Lastly Ted was fiercely passionate and proud of his family. Rosemary, his wife of almost 37 years was a high school sweetheart. He was proud of each of his children, Rolf, Erica, and Hans, and of their achievements. Lastly he was tickled to be able to meet his first grandchild Anna.
Ted was a man of many talents, and passions, the like rarely seen today.
I know he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

“Indeed, we belong to God, and indeed, to Him we return.” – Quran 2:156
Ed always liked to learn about history, politics. religions and cultures. The things they say you shouldn’t discuss at work, but with Ed, anything could be discussed. Aside from our shared passion for all things aeronautical engineering, we both liked to learn the truth about history, trying to better understand the world we’re in by knowing about the past. It was this inquisitiveness that made Ed a natural champion for airworthiness and guardian of safety.
Ed was a very competent engineer and a bastion of reliability. He fulfilled the airworthiness engineering role on his shoulders, alone, for more than seven years before I was hired to help him. In that role, he not only carried out the required project engineering work, but played a major role in developing the safety culture of the lab and mentored a countless number of colleagues at NRC and outside of NRC. Everyone who interacted with Ed was likely have benefited from some bit of knowledge or have been influenced in some positive way.
In addition to being very diligent and generous with teaching and mentoring, Ed was an extremely kind, considerate, and compassionate man. He mentored me for 3 years before I was actually hired to work for him. I consider myself extremely blessed to have had his mentorship in the formative years of my career. The knowledge he passed on, the lessons he taught, the mindset and culture he promoted, all had a major influence on me, even till this day. I still hear his voice in my internal conversations, making it impossible to separate the memory of Ed Pinnell from the daily conduct of my work.
Although Ed’s time on Earth has come to end, his legacy lives on in all the people who have benefitted from his contributions, either directly or indirectly. God bless him.
Sincere condolences to the Pinnell family.
Ashraf

Worked with Ed for many years at Boeing and his time at NRC. Ed had a wry sense of humour, something in common. Easy to relate to and many a times words need not spoken during our careers together. Always up for a good debate, fair, and sympathetic. Carry on Ed, carry on.

I wish my sincere condolence to Rosemary and the whole family, it was a pleasure to work with Ed, he though us so much at work, and was able to bring the FRL team to another level with his expectations for safety and making it right.
Ed was a very good mentor and loved to teach others, he always took his time and went into details.
In the past he had a young engineer name Duncan that worked with him for two years.
One week Ed was teaching Duncan about hydrogen embrittlement, he showed him the book section and told Duncan to go upstairs and to photocopy the chapter. A couple’s minutes after, Duncan came back with an unhappy face, Ed asked him what was wrong, Duncan told him that went he but the ring binder on the photocopy machine he broke the glass. Ed started to laugh and said “now you know what happens to material expose to hydrogen embrittlement, they become brittle and break easily like glass…”
I will miss your sense of humour and smile, I still saw your expression went I told you work stories that surprised you the last time I saw you over the winter…

Ed, myself and numerous others who. Love our country worked diligently to restore faith in the political system and Ed went from member, to director, Riding President to candidate in Federal Elections and paved the way for Cheryl Gallant to be elected… Ed was a great father, example and. modern hero to all who knew him! Louise and I want to extend our condolences to Rosemary and the family and I wish to express my deep admiration for my former boss. Ed recruited me to work at the Flight Research Lab of NRC where he greeted me with "welcome to the last job of your career", meaning almost everyone who worked there stayed until retirement and in my case, he was right. He worked very hard to help me negotiate a good starting salary and then I saw him work tirelessly on behalf of other colleagues at NRC to help them move up in their careers. He continued to support my career advancement even when it meant losing me as one of his resources at a time when the airworthiness department consisted of just the two of us. Ed was a great advocate for getting as many lab employees as possible the chance for some flight experience as he felt it would help them improve their own work to the benefit of the lab. As others have said, Ed was a great mentor; always keen to explain the reasons for his airworthiness decisions and educate anyone willing to learn from his engineering knowledge. Many of us benefitted from this generous trait. Dedicated to the safe and productive use of the research aircraft fleet and to the success of our research clients, he was rigorous and meticulous but also sought the input of everyone connected to a given project to ensure that we made decisions that were fully informed. He was a consummate professional in all respects, but also passionate about the work. This passion was sometimes shown forcefully in meetings, usually accompanied by a relevant and sobering anecdote and always followed up graciously. I really admired his handwriting and engineering sketches (far neater than my own!) through which he always conveyed his work clearly. Ed was also just an interesting guy to talk to about all manner of subjects! I regret that I won't be able to attend the service as I'll be out of the country but my thoughts will be with Rosemary and with Ed's families, personal and professional.
