Obituary of Ed Murphy
With profound sadness and shattered hearts, the family regretfully announces that Ed passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 16, 2024. He was all of 68 years young. Beloved husband and best friend of Angela Havey. Cherished and devoted Dad of Megan and her husband Jeffrey Elliott and Stepfather of Lise and Erin. He will be missed by his best buddy Clancy of whom he was so very proud. Dearest and proud brother of Helen Murphy and Irene Campbell (late Brian). Predeceased by brothers: Tom (Sheila) and John (Bernice). Also survived and fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, as well as the Havey family. Son of the late Edward J. and Irene (nee Kewley) Murphy.
Ed, or Eddy as he was known to many, was strongly defined by family and community values. He was born and raised in Arnprior, a town of which he was proud to call home. He dedicated his life to public service with a strong focus on youth development. Known as “Coach” to many, Ed’s love of football drew him back to ADHS where he coached and mentored hundreds of Ottawa Valley’s youth for over 15 years. A particular source of pride for him was running into “his boys” out in the community, and hearing about their accomplishments after high school.
Ed was a proud member of the Arnprior Optimist Club, where he served as President and Lt. Governor. He personified their motto “friend of youth”.
Ed was also a proud Irishman. He could often be found pouring over historical documents and researching his family roots. His love of history was a natural progression to his recent appointment as Vice President of Arnprior & McNab/Braeside Archives. He had started walking the town through the decades with his guided tours, and was looking forward to continuing to share the history of Arnprior.
Ed took great pride in his home and property, where his flag collection was always flying over his perfectly manicured lawn. During the fall, you could find him in his garage where he would be cheering on his two favourite teams, the Argos and Notre Dame (Go Irish!). Friends were always welcomed with a cold beer and a warm hug.
Starting his career as a draftsman at Mitel, as technology progressed, so did Ed. He often recounted how fortunate he was to have chosen a career that he loved and that gave him joy. He was a dedicated employee of CCI Products, and will be missed by his fellow colleagues.
Final arrangements for Ed have been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, November 20th from 6 to 9 p.m. and again on Thursday morning, November 21st from 9:30 to 10:30.
